gun

Your body lies under this field
It isn’t the sword it isn’t your shield
That’s going to protect you from the shadows of death
But it’s the quiver of one last breath

Along the banks of a river in turmoil
The debris plants its seed in the soil
But nothing grows from a rifle in hand
Until all deadly devices are banned

You said so on a wintry day
While the wind was leading you astray
You found a path that looked very sound
Yearning for it be homebound

Stop for a while, stop right now
Let the wind play with your brow
Rest your body on a bed of stones
Take the weight off your weary bones

But as you give yourself this treat
There is another who’s standing discreet
He shares with you a similar mind
But waves a flag of a different kind

Shoot him now, shoot while you can
Isn’t this part of the plan?
If you look in his eyes you may as well
Give him the time to wish you farewell

Something touches you deep in your soul
And for a while you forget your goal
You forgot the game you are playing
Means one lives while the other is dying

And as you lose yourself in your thoughts
The air fills with the sound of gunshots
You feel the piercing of each round
Before you know it you’re deep in the ground

Isn’t it funny how sometimes you know
When life is about to go
When time remaining won’t give you a chance
To claim for what you’ve paid in advance

The wind stills as a sign of respect
The day was not as you’d expect
For a while your body can rest in the sun
Under the shadow of your loaded gun

Your body lies under this field
It isn’t the sword it isn’t your shield
That’s going to protect you from the shadows of death
But it’s the quiver of one last breath
